As the spring weather continues to warm up, residents will be able to enjoy more time outside.

The City of Lethbridge has opened its annual Outdoor Patios, Parklets and Street Vending program.

It allows businesses to transform streets and sidewalks into vibrant spaces.

Jacob Ramsdell, Manager of The Penny Coffee House, says they have enjoyed utilizing the outdoor spaces program.

“It’s allowed us to have more people eat here during the summer months. And our customers look forward to it. We’re glad they can enjoy what the Penny has to offer and the beautiful sunny days that Lethbridge is known for,” says Ramsdell.

The program initially started in 2020 when businesses needed ways of serving customers that would be safe and within the rules of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now that COVID restrictions are no longer a thing, the City says it has shifted the program to a “cost-recovery model” with small administrative and space use fees.

“This program has become part of the character of our downtown and commercial areas,” says Justin Schipper, Urban Revitalization Administrator. “We’re focused on growing the program to support businesses while also making sure it’s financially sustainable in the long run.”
